Perfect Spirits

Perfect Spirits

With her 26 androgynous human sculptures, in an exhibit of downtown street art at Westlake Park, called “Borders”, Icelandic sculptor Steinunn Thórarinsdóttir seeks to bring a significant and striking artistic experience to the daily lives of Seattle citizens and visitors. The figures stand dispersed around the park and seated on park benches, mirroring each other in silent conversation and form unseen borders that visitors are welcome to cross — serving as ambassadors between sculptures.

However, although visually impressive, not everyone is happy to see them there - especially those less fortunate who are homeless. Many have come to rely on the urban park benches to stretch out on to sleep in relative safety. Some believe it to be a conspiracy by Town Hall officials to cleanse them out of downtown and the touristy areas; and those in the Occupy Seattle brigade also believe they were placed there to stop them pitching tents as they did last year.

I don’t think this is the case - this is just one of the many typical outdoor public art exhibits that’s been growing in and around Seattle over the past few years.
