BSP14 Benwell Hotel Awaits New Use

Adelaide Terrace, Benwell, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, England, UK

The Benwell Hotel has been on the go since to turn of the twentieth century, but it has been closed and boarded up since 2008. Estate agents have been seeking in vain for new owners whilst the fabric deteriorates. It now looks as though some urban speculator has been granted plans to turn it into a restaurant and take away, to compete with the chip shop, two pizzerias, the Chinese take away and two cafés in the vicinity. It is intended that the building will house rentable retail space (shops closing all around) and some flats in the old hotel rooms.

Whether this will be a sustainable business proposition remains to be seen. My opinion is that it will be marginal, if at all viable

Speaking in 2009, Maldemann said, "Sad news if The Benwell really has gone, my local back in the early 80's while a Newcastle Poly student. A real old fashioned boozer then (with the odd lock in too.) Weekend nights were wonderful with a right old sing a long going on at last orders. As for the "face punching fun" that was surely The Adelaide next door, part of the shopping centre ... its been a long time though."
